Ironman Newborn Heroes 3

Caroline Steffen – Success and Generosity

For Newborns Vietnam, there was an unexpected final wonderful moment of VNG Ironman 70.3 Vietnam 2015

Caroline Steffen the Pro athlete winner of the Women’s Ironman championship donated her winnings to Newborns Vietnam.

She spoke of it being a great race and of her visit to the Da Nang Hospital for Women & Children and wanting to give something back to make a difference for the newborns in Vietnam. This was such an amazing and inspiring moment there were more than a few tears in the crowd.

Caroline’s amazing generosity has been used to buy a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. CPAP is a standard technology in developed world countries; it provides relief from respiratory distress and pneumonia, all problems common in premature and low birth-weight infants whose lungs are insufficiently developed. Pressurised air is delivered through prongs in the baby’s nose allowing continuous lung inflation. CPAP has been instrumental in saving newborn lives around the world, and it remains one of the most important tools in the low-cost intervention lifesaving kit.
